birthday and other thoughts

The above photo is from a magical evening at Roberta's on my birthday on the 21st. The evening comprised of great friends, several rounds of 'dark and stormy', delicious pizzas, and the good times continued on in the dreamy backyard of The Narrows.

Speaking of getting older, this blog has been around since June 2007. That's a while. I've been working on a blog redesign and porting the whole thing over to wp. Right now things are a little busy work-wise so I am running a little behind on that. And and I have an entire roll of film from Costa Rica still needing to be developed (terrible!). I think I need new photo energy...maybe a new tool will cure that. In other news, I am excited to teach at Parsons this Fall! Last summer involved several teaching stints and I was hooked.

Things I've been liking right now: Pocket for bookmarking, Harvest for invoicing, Svpply's iPad app for looking at pretty things and the NYTimes' The Collection app, especially for catching up on Bill Cunningham's audio slideshows which make me so, so happy.

Costa Rica, part 2

The hot springs needed a repeat visit in that cloudy cool weather we encountered throughout. Again, even less of a sign of the volcano today. (Costa Rica, part 1 here)



The drive to the waterfall got us totally lost but the diversions were very welcome.



The hike to a most stunning waterfall took us through another beautiful forest, through slippery steps, a hanging bridge, more rain and forest sounds, stunning foliage of the brightest flowers and we quietly prepared ourselves for leaving this area and driving away to another beautiful place in Costa Rica.

Warmed earlier by our time at the hot springs, we weren't as inclined to take a dip this time.



Before that hike we saw so many guava trees with unripe fruit that we peered through every fruit stand on our drive to find some guavas but guavas were not be found on any of the fruit stands though we got some delicious mangoes and some other berry type fruit. The kid at the fruit stand had an iguana with a string tied to it and his sister was carrying around a sloth. Further along on the highway, a man was selling guava trees (!) and fruit. Score.



The car smelled sweetly of fruit now. The drive was beautiful, through rolling hills with more lush, green forests. The sun started peeking through the clouds as we got closer to our beach destination. And then we saw a rainbow!

Costa Rica, part 1

This trip was majorly guided by this brilliant travelogue by Ashley and Aron. While we were planning to go to Costa Rica I thought to just check Hither and Thither to see if they had maybe been there. And they had. And their recommendations and tips were perfect! (Again.) I recommend checking out their travelogue to get a most comprehensive idea of what to do in Costa Rica.





As soon as we landed and picked up the car, we looked for a place to eat on our way to La Fortuna and followed Aron's recommendation for Chubasco's and had the most amazing batidos and the best Casado I had on the trip. The location too was so dreamy with the afternoon clouds slowly enveloping the mountains in foggy mistiness.





We were totally smitten by the forests and hills and rain and surprise waterfall we saw on the drive.




The clouds refused to reveal the volcano as we looked out the window the next morning. It rained the entire time we hiked in the rainforest (!) but cleared up just enough as we reached the lava rocks and got a better look at the volcano. The forest sounds, rain through the tall trees, the search for monkeys, sudden burst of the brightest, most colorful flowers...it was all incredible. This was followed by a dip in the hot springs. Lunch involved some more casados and some more batidos but nothing as good as that first meal at Chubasco's. We ziplined through the forest and it was so dense, lush, rainy. Back at the hotel, we swam in the pool while it rained continuously.

right now...

...there is excitement for an upcoming trip, need to pack, figure out driving routes and itineraries, print out many things, buy lots of film, then remember to shoot lots of film on the trip, tie all loose ends before taking off, download books (want to read so many books!), one more sip of iced coffee, feel happy and content looking at photos from the most beautiful, funnest, sweetest, outdoor wedding on Sunday, still haven't bought those plants for that balcony, must do that next week, and also go to this next week, and I want to shop today, a new dress and maybe a denim shirt, work things are in the works, hoping for that to settle next week...
